The 2025 Fresh Water Award Presentation

The IGSS Freshwater Award
In 1959 The Island Goats Sailing Society Established
A Citation of Merit known as the Fresh Water Award
To Recognize Meritorious Service or
Outstanding Contribution
to Off-Shore Sailing.
• I’m very excited to present the 2025 IGSS Fresh Water Award.
• This year’s honoree has spent his entire adult life as an advocate
for sailboat racing. And I must admit, his passion, his dedication and
his time commitment to this sport are commendable.
Some of his achievements are:
1. Chair, CYC Mackinac Committee for the 100th and the 101st Races to Mackinac
(the two largest races in history; 462 boats in 2008 and 375 boats in 2009)
2. Served on the Board and a Flag Officer of the Chicago Yacht Club for almost 12 years,
including as Commodore in 2015 and 2016. I believe he was the youngest
Commodore in CYC history.
3. He chaired the Chicago Regatta for three years. As a fundraiser,
this regatta has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the three participating charities.
4. In 2016, he co-founded CASRA, the Chicago Area Sail Racing Association,
and has served as its president.
5. Is a certified US Sailing Club Judge.
6. As a CYC Flag Officer, has given keynote presentations at the International
Council of Yacht Clubs at both the North American and World Forum.
7. He has served on race committees and protest committees.
8. And most recently, he is the President of the CYC Foundation, and has been
instrumental in creating a program focused on getting Chicagoland youth to experience
the joys and benefits of boating.
• Somehow he has also managed to sail for 50 years, completing 38 CYC Races to Mackinac.
And, he has won overall three times, including podium section finishes 20 times.
• I think that you will all agree that he has made an outstanding contribution
to offshore sailing.
• And now, it’s my great honor and pleasure to present the
2025 Island Goats Sailing Society Freshwater Award to Greg Miarecki.
