US SAILING ELECTS FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT
Press Release: St. Louis, MO (October 19, 2003)
US SAILING, national governing body of the sport, has named its first woman president: Janet C. Baxter of Chicago, IL. Immediate past president Dave Rosekrans (Cincinnati, OH) passed the helm to Baxter at the organization's annual general meeting in St. Louis today.
"I'm honored and excited to serve as president of US SAILING," said Baxter. "I look forward to working with many sailors who have a passion to make the sport better and to share it with others."
Baxter first joined the US SAILING's Board of Directors at age 30, making her one of the youngest Board members at the time. She has worked with the organization's finance and membership committees and is a certified judge. "I hope to help our volunteers be more effective, touching more sailors and enriching our current programs. We can make better use of technology and communications and in this Olympic year, we'll have a lot of sailing to talk about," said Baxter. She is also on the audit committee of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
Like many sailors, Baxter was introduced to the sport through family, racing on the family boat with parents and siblings and attending sailing school at Chicago Yacht Club. Her father received US SAILING's highest honor, the Nathanial Herreshoff Award, for his work for offshore sailors and judging. Her two brothers and one sister are all in the marine business, but for Janet, sailing is a recreation only. She works at IBM Business Consulting Services.
Baxter races actively in Chicago, where she has participated in 27 Chicago to Mackinac races, most recently on a Tartan Ten. She has raced a variety of offshore boats as well as Etchells, Lasers and other dinghies. "My biggest finish was the year we won our section in the Mac Race and the trophy we won was named after my grandfather," said Baxter.
The US SAILING President serves for a one-year term and a maximum of three terms.
Rosekrans led the organization from October 2000 through this 2003 annual general meeting. "It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve the sport of sailing," said Rosekrans. "I am confident that the sport will continue to progress under the leadership of Janet Baxter."
The mission of the United States Sailing Association (US SAILING) is to encourage participation and promote excellence in sailing and racing in the U.S. Headquartered in Portsmouth, US SAILING offers training and education programs, develops and supports a wide range of sailing organizations, associations and communities, and provides administration and oversight of competitive sailing across the country.
